Fed: Labor sets up new Sydney airport search group

CANBERRA, Aug 12 AAP - The federal opposition today set up a working group to lookfor a new site for a second Sydney airport.

A spokesman said the Labor caucus approved a shadow ministry recommendation to establishthe group under Opposition Leader Simon Crean.

The spokesman said Badgery' Creek was rejected as the new airport site.

He said the group would work out processes to find the best site and aimed to identifya preferred site in time for the ALP national conference next January.

Mr Crean upset some Sydney MPs when he announced last month that Labor would rejectBadgerys Creek.

The spokesman said that although the working group was made up of frontbenchers, MrCrean had promised that other MPs would be "kept in the loop".

"Peace has broken out on the airport front," the spokesman said.

However he admitted that it would be very difficult to make a final choice on the long-runningissue from opposition.
