Main Line Animal Rescue Reports on Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher Tweets about Puppy Mills
Type: News
It started with a billboard in Los Angeles asking Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher to tweet their millions of followers and encourage them to adopt dogs from shelters rather buy dogs bred in puppy mills - factory farms where hundreds of breeding dogs are kept in deplorable conditions, their puppies sold in pet stores or over the Internet, according to a release Main Line Animal Rescue.
Sponsored by author Jana Kohl and Main Line Animal Rescue, the campaign soon attracted the attention of comedian and long-time animal advocate Carol Leifer, who used her contacts in the entertainment industry to reach out to the Kutchers. On June 2, Demi Moore tweeted her almost four million followers, included the web site dogsinacage.com, and declared the dogs need our help. The tweet was met with elation throughout the animal welfare community and Moore was praised for her commitment to the humane treatment of breeding dogs in factory farms.
After reading Moore's tweet, Kelly Colbert, producer of Madonna of the Mills (a documentary focusing on animal rescue and puppy mills airing on HBO this summer) contacted The Biggest Loser's Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels of The Doctors and they soon retweeted Moore's tweet to their almost half a million fans. Michaels and Harper have long been strong and tireless champions of shelter dogs and cats and have done much to educate their fans on a variety of issues concerning the welfare of animals.
Main Line Animal Rescue used a billboard to attract Oprah Winfrey's attention three years ago.
"It's not surprising Demi Moore would agree to help the millions of breeding dogs who are abused and exploited in this country every year - considering all her work on behalf of abused and exploited children through the Demi and Ashton Foundation (demiandashton.org)," said Bill Smith of MLAR. "Demi Moore gives a voice to the voiceless and uses her celebrity to make the world a better place."
Kohl and volunteers of MLAR urge families to adopt a pet from their local shelter rather than support the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills by buying their puppies over the Internet or from pet stores.

SCI:Better future for infertility treatment
A team of Australian scientists says a breakthrough in gene technology could have important
implications for the treatment of male infertility.
The researchers, based at the Australian National University, say they've discovered
a new mechanism of gene activation.
Team leader Professor DAVID TREMETHICK says they've identified how "misregulation"
of an epigenetic marker, which is implicated in diseases, is also a contributor to human
infertility.
Prof TREMETHICK says the marker, named H2A.Lap1 regulates how genes are activated in
sperm which could help researchers understand how cellular differentiation is achieved.

Fed: Memorial planned for Centaur victims
By Darren Cartwright
BRISBANE, Dec 20 AAP - A memorial service will be held to honour those who died on
the torpedoed World War II hospital ship Centaur, which has been found off Moreton Island
near Brisbane.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said shipwreck hunters found the ship about 4.30am (AEST)
on Sunday, much earlier than they expected, 2,059m below the surface, 30 nautical miles
due east from the southern tip of Moreton Island.
It will be marked as a military gravesite and protected by an exclusion zone.
"Once we've been through the entire search process we will be go about an appropriate
way of preserving and marking this site," Ms Bligh told reporters.
"I will be working with the RSL and other appropriate groups including Friends of the
Centaur to determine a way to mark this important gravesite."
A Japanese submarine torpedoed the Centaur without warning on May 14, 1943. Of the
332 people on board, 268 died.
Search director David Mearns said the Centaur was relatively intact although the hull
is partially broken.
"The Centaur lies in one piece on the lower flank of a narrow gully, which measures
150 metres wide and about 90 metres deep and is bounded by steep walls on either side
- one with a slope of roughly 45 degrees," he wrote on his blog on Sunday morning.
Ms Bligh said Mr Mearns and his crew would return to the Centaur in January with submarines
and submersible cameras to film and document the site.
The Australian and Queensland governments jointly committed $4 million to the search
and officers from the Department of Defence and the Department of Premier and Cabinet
provided oversight and technical assistance to the project.
"In January the team will film the gravesite and early next year we will look at some
type of memorial service where we can finally lay these brave Australians to rest and
to rest in peace," Ms Bligh said.
"The ship has broken two-thirds the way down, indicating where the torpedo is likely
have hit it."
"These Australians who lost their lives in the service of our country can rest in peace."
John Argent said his father Jack, who was a paramedic on the Centaur and survived the
attack, rarely spoke about the tragedy.
He said his father told him the ship sank in three minutes because the torpedo directly
hit the "fuel bunker".
"I know that he went to his grave 26 years ago with no closure on it at all," Mr Argent said.
"It was the fact he had lost many mates in the blink of an eye.
"He would have felt a lot better with the fact they had found it and they could formally
recognise what went on."
Queensland Nurses Union secretary Gay Hawksworth said the 11 nurses who lost their
lives would be respectfully honoured and remembered.
"I know many nurses, on hearing this news, will take a minute to reflect on this tragedy
and the important role many thousands of their colleagues have played during wartime,"
Ms Hawksworth said.

FED: Jobs will go if international students stay away: report
CANBERRA, April 1 AAP - More than 6,000 jobs will be lost if overseas student enrolments
drop five per cent amid the global financial crisis, new research shows.
International tertiary students spent $14.1 billion on education services in 2007-08
and contributed a further $12.6 billion spent on goods and services.
Their total contribution of $26.7 billion to the Australian economy includes money
spent by visiting family and friends, the Access Economics report suggests.
The export education market creates 126,240 local jobs, the report says.
But 6,312 of those jobs would vanish if the sector suffered a five per cent drop in
overseas enrolments as a result of the deepening global recession, the report estimates.
The blow to the economy would be in the order of $1.3 billion.
The Rudd government is worried about a potential decline in numbers, having announced
last month it would spend $3.5 million trying to attract international students to Australia
next year.
The Study in Australia 2010 campaign will target students in countries including China,
India, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand during the next eight months.
However, the doom and gloom scenario may not play out.
Recent figures show international students are still coming to Australia to study despite
the global recession.
In the 12 months to January 2009, enrolments by full-fee-paying international students
jumped 21.4 per cent over the previous year.
However, those figures need to be taken with a grain of salt, because most commencements
in the first half of any year are normally recorded in February and March.
The Access Economics report, commissioned by the Australian Council for Private Education
and Training, states 207,000 overseas students studied in Australia in 2006.
That's 7.5 per cent of the entire global market.

AUCKLAND, Aug 8 AAP - New Zealand Warriors player Michael Crockett is under investigation
by NSW Police over claims that he sexually assaulted a woman in Sydney.
Chief executive Wayne Scurrah, who will address media at 11am Auckland time today,
said in a statement that Crockett strenuously denied the allegations.
Scurrah said the alleged incident happened away from the team's hotel and Crockett
was the only player being investigated.
"We have informed the National Rugby League and our major partners about the issue," he said.
"The club has assisted Michael in gaining access to legal advice."
The incident followed the Warriors draw with the Roosters on Sunday. The woman made
the complaint to Redfern police early Monday morning.
Crockett, a winger for the Warriors, has been dropped from this week's match against

NRL CEO David Gallop told The Daily Telegraph the league was monitoring the investigation

NSW: Government neglects smoke alarm initiative: Opposition
SYDNEY, April 21 AAP - The NSW government has not done enough to inform people that
smoke alarms will soon be compulsory in all homes, the opposition says.
The state government last year introduced laws making it compulsory for all homes,
boarding houses, motels, hotels and hostels to have working smoke alarms installed by

A moratorium on the deadline means penalties for not adhering to the laws will not
be enforced for another six months.
Opposition emergency services spokesman Andrew Humpherson said government had paid

Fed: Send a navy ship to watch the Japanese whalers - Brown
EDS: Reissues to correct that Brown's comments were made to Sky News, not ABC Radio,
as previously sent.
CANBERRA, Dec 23 AAP - The federal government needs to take a stronger stand against
whaling and deploy a navy ship in its southern waters to monitor Japanese activities,
Greens leader Bob Brown says.
Senator Brown said the government had done little to stop the slaughter of whales in
Australia's sub-Antarctic zone while impounding dozens of Indonesian fishing boats in
its northern territorial waters.
The senator's comments come as Greenpeace vessels confront Japanese whalers in Australia's
self-proclaimed Southern Ocean whale sanctuary.
He said a key task was to make the Japanese people understand what their whaling ships
were doing in the Antarctic seas.
"If we had a naval surveillance ship down there we'd be able to do that," Senator Brown
told Sky News today.
"Remember, this government has impounded scores of Indonesian fishing boats. It's spent
millions chasing pirate ships, like the Portuguese ship brought into Perth during this
year.
"But when it comes to this piracy of whales in our waters, it seems to be sitting on its hands.
"One has to wonder if that isn't because the prime minister wants to get a free trade
agreement going with the Japanese prime minister in the coming 12 months."
Senator Brown, who said he would join a protest in Hobart tomorrow to meet the arrival
of a Japanese whaler on an emergency medical errand, said Greenpeace was showing the way
to the government.
"The government should be making the stand that Greenpeace is making against what the
Japanese are doing to our whales in our waters," he said.
