NSW: Government neglects smoke alarm initiative: Opposition

SYDNEY, April 21 AAP - The NSW government has not done enough to inform people that
smoke alarms will soon be compulsory in all homes, the opposition says.

The state government last year introduced laws making it compulsory for all homes,
boarding houses, motels, hotels and hostels to have working smoke alarms installed by
May 1 this year.

A moratorium on the deadline means penalties for not adhering to the laws will not
be enforced for another six months.

Opposition emergency services spokesman Andrew Humpherson said government had paid
little attention to the life-saving initiative.

"We don't believe the advertising has been sufficient, and many people don't realise
they should have these (smoke alarms) installed," Mr Humpherson told reporters.

A spokeswoman for Emergency Services Minister Tony Kelly said Mr Humpherson hadn't
been paying attention to the government's publicity campaign.

"We're running radio, print and TV ads," the spokeswoman said.

"(Mr Humpherson) hasn't got the full story. He's obviously not watching a lot of TV
or absorbing what we've been doing."
